Why see Madama Butterfly at Teatro La Fenice
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (also written Madame Butterfly) is one of the most beloved and heartbreaking operas ever written — the story of Cio-Cio-San, a young geisha in turn-of-the-century Nagasaki who gives everything for a love that betrays her. Its great arias, above all the shimmering “Un bel dì vedremo”, have made it one of the most performed operas in the world.
To hear it inside Teatro La Fenice — Venice’s legendary opera house — with a full orchestra and chorus is opera at its most powerful. Compare the available dates above and choose the evening that best fits your visit to the city.
Teatro La Fenice
Teatro La Fenice — “the Phoenix” — is one of the most famous and most beautiful opera houses in the world. Opened in 1792, it has risen from fire three times, most recently after the blaze of 1996, and reopened in 2003 looking much as it did two centuries ago. Its stage gave the world the premieres of Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata, and to hear music here is to sit inside living history.
Getting there is part of the magic: Venice has no cars, so you arrive on foot or by vaporetto (water bus). The nearest stops are Santa Maria del Giglio and Rialto, both a short walk through the lanes from Piazza San Marco. Allow extra time to find the theatre — half the pleasure is getting a little lost in Venice on the way.

Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in Venice
Set in Nagasaki at the beginning of the twentieth century, Madama Butterfly tells the tragic story of Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese woman who marries American naval officer B. F. Pinkerton.
For Pinkerton, the marriage is a temporary arrangement. For Cio-Cio-San, it represents a permanent commitment and the beginning of a new life. After he returns to the United States, she waits faithfully for his promised return, refusing to believe that he has abandoned her.
When Pinkerton finally comes back to Japan, he is accompanied by his American wife. The discovery destroys Cio-Cio-San’s hopes and leads the opera towards its devastating conclusion.
Puccini combines intimate lyricism, dramatic orchestration and memorable melodies in a work that remains one of the most frequently performed operas in the international repertoire.
La Fenice’s acclaimed production
The 2027 performances revive a production first created for Teatro La Fenice in 2013. Directed by Àlex Rigola, the staging was developed as a special project connected with the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
The visual world is shaped by Mariko Mori, whose work gives the production a contemporary Japanese aesthetic rather than relying entirely on conventional nineteenth-century imagery. Albert Faura’s lighting supports the changing emotional atmosphere as Cio-Cio-San’s optimism gradually gives way to isolation and tragedy.
This returning La Fenice staging provides an opportunity to see Puccini’s familiar masterpiece through a distinctive visual interpretation created specifically for Venice.

The music of Madama Butterfly
Madama Butterfly is presented in two acts, with a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, adapted from the story by John Luther Long and the stage play by David Belasco.
The score includes some of Puccini’s most recognisable music. Cio-Cio-San’s aria “Un bel dì vedremo” expresses her certainty that Pinkerton will return, while the famous Humming Chorus creates the stillness and expectation of the night before the opera’s final events.
The performance lasts approximately two hours and forty minutes, including one interval.
