Why see Fedora at Teatro La Fenice

Umberto Giordano’s Fedora is a gripping verismo thriller of love, jealousy and revenge, set among the salons of Paris and the Russian aristocracy. It is famous above all for “Amor ti vieta” — one of the shortest and most swooning tenor arias in all of opera — and for a story that races like a stage melodrama.

A rarer jewel than the great warhorses, a night of Fedora at Teatro La Fenice is a treat for opera lovers looking for something beyond the familiar, performed in one of the most beautiful theatres in the world. Compare the dates above and choose your evening in Venice.

Teatro La Fenice

Teatro La Fenice — “the Phoenix” — is one of the most famous and most beautiful opera houses in the world. Opened in 1792, it has risen from fire three times, most recently after the blaze of 1996, and reopened in 2003 looking much as it did two centuries ago. Its stage gave the world the premieres of Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata, and to hear music here is to sit inside living history.

Getting there is part of the magic: Venice has no cars, so you arrive on foot or by vaporetto (water bus). The nearest stops are Santa Maria del Giglio and Rialto, both a short walk through the lanes from Piazza San Marco. Allow extra time to find the theatre — half the pleasure is getting a little lost in Venice on the way.

Fedora returns to La Fenice after nearly sixty years

This production marks the return of Fedora to the Teatro La Fenice stage for the first time since 1968, making it one of the most significant revivals in the theatre’s new season.

Giordano’s opera combines political intrigue, concealed identities, jealousy and an increasingly dangerous love affair. Its intense emotional writing and atmospheric orchestration make it one of the composer’s most representative mature works.

The story follows Princess Fedora Romazoff, who becomes determined to identify the person responsible for her fiancé’s death. Her investigation leads her to Count Loris Ipanoff, but suspicion gradually gives way to passion, forcing Fedora to choose between vengeance and love.

The production is presented in three acts, with music by Umberto Giordano and a libretto by Arturo Colautti, based on Victorien Sardou’s celebrated play.

A new production by Hugo de Ana

Director Hugo de Ana is responsible for the staging, sets and costumes, creating a completely new Teatro La Fenice production for the opening of the season.

The creative team also includes lighting designer Valerio Alfieri and choreographer Michele Cosentino. The combination of a new visual production and Giordano’s emotionally charged score should make this Fedora particularly appealing to audiences seeking a dramatic Italian opera rather than a conventional repertoire revival.

Donato Renzetti conducts the Orchestra and Choir of Teatro La Fenice. His musical direction will shape a score known for moving rapidly between intimate conversations, elegant social scenes and powerful moments of orchestral tension.

Fedora cast at Teatro La Fenice

The title role of Princess Fedora Romazoff will be performed across the run by Maria Agresta and Rachele Stanisci.

Vincenzo Costanzo and Amadi Lagha share the role of Count Loris Ipanoff, while Ekaterina Bakanova appears as Countess Olga Sukarev and Simone Piazzola sings De Siriex.

The cast also includes:

  • Carmine Riccio as Desiré and Baron Rouvel
  • Fabrizio Brancaccio as Cirillo
  • William Corrò as Borov
  • Adriano Gramigni as Grech

Maria Agresta, Vincenzo Costanzo and Ekaterina Bakanova are expected to make role debuts in this production.

The history of Giordano’s Fedora

Giordano first encountered Sardou’s play in Naples in 1889, when he saw Sarah Bernhardt perform the title role. He initially struggled to obtain permission to transform the drama into an opera, but his success with Andrea Chénier later helped the project move forward.

Fedora received its world premiere at Milan’s Teatro Lirico Internazionale on November 17, 1898, with the young Enrico Caruso singing Loris. The opera achieved immediate success and was subsequently presented in major European musical centres, including Vienna and Paris.

Its most famous musical moment is Loris’s short but intensely lyrical aria “Amor ti vieta”, although the complete opera offers a much broader combination of romance, suspense and tragedy.

Opening Night at La Fenice

The performance on Friday, November 13, 2026, is the official opening night of the new opera season.

Black-tie attire is required for this performance, making it a more formal occasion than the remaining dates. Spectators choosing the premiere should plan suitable evening dress and allow additional time for arrival and entry.

The subsequent performances offer the same production in a less formal setting, including afternoon options on November 14, 15 and 22.

Choosing seats for Fedora

Available categories at Teatro La Fenice may include stalls, central and lateral boxes, gallery and upper-gallery seating.

The stalls generally provide the most direct view of the full stage. Central boxes combine a traditional La Fenice experience with a balanced perspective, while lateral boxes may offer angled or partially restricted views depending on the precise seat.

For a production with detailed staging and costumes, central stalls or front seats in centrally positioned boxes are likely to provide the strongest overall experience.
