Why see Adriana Lecouvreur at Teatro La Fenice

Francesco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur (1902) is a jewel of Italian verismo, inspired by the life of a real star of the 18th-century Comédie-Française. The celebrated actress Adriana loves the soldier Maurizio, unaware that her rival for his affections is the powerful Princess de Bouillon—a jealousy that spirals toward one of opera’s most poignant deaths, brought about by a bouquet of poisoned violets. Cilea surrounds the drama with lush, elegant orchestration and a bittersweet sense of the theatre’s fragile glamour.

Adriana introduces herself with the exquisite aria “Io son l’umile ancella,” in which she calls herself merely the humble handmaid of the creative spirit—a soaring profession of artistic modesty that has become a favorite of the great sopranos. Performed at Teatro La Fenice, Venice’s legendary opera house, this backstage tragedy about the world of the stage finds a peculiarly fitting home within one of Europe’s most storied playhouses.

Teatro La Fenice

Teatro La Fenice — “the Phoenix” — is one of the most famous and most beautiful opera houses in the world. Opened in 1792, it has risen from fire three times, most recently after the blaze of 1996, and reopened in 2003 looking much as it did two centuries ago. Its stage gave the world the premieres of Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata, and to be here is to sit inside living history.

Getting there is part of the magic: Venice has no cars, so you arrive on foot or by vaporetto (water bus). The nearest stops are Santa Maria del Giglio and Rialto, both a short walk through the lanes from Piazza San Marco. Allow extra time to find the theatre — half the pleasure is getting a little lost in Venice on the way.

Adriana Lecouvreur returns to La Fenice

The return of Adriana Lecouvreur is one of the major revivals in La Fenice’s 2026/27 season.

Cilea’s four-act opera combines the glamour of eighteenth-century Parisian theatre with a private conflict involving love, rivalry and revenge. Its central character was inspired by the real French actress Adrienne Lecouvreur, a celebrated performer admired by Voltaire whose premature death became surrounded by rumours of poisoning.

The opera’s long absence from La Fenice makes these performances particularly appealing to regular opera audiences and visitors looking beyond the most frequently staged Italian repertoire.

The story of Adriana Lecouvreur

Adriana is a leading actress at the Comédie-Française and is secretly in love with Maurizio, whom she believes to be a young soldier. In reality, he is Maurice, Count of Saxony, and is also involved with the powerful Princess of Bouillon.

Adriana and the Princess gradually discover that they love the same man. Their rivalry moves from concealed suspicion to open hostility, reaching its most theatrical moment when Adriana uses a performance from Racine’s Phèdre to publicly insult her rival.

The Princess later sends Adriana a bouquet of poisoned violets. Believing they have come from Maurizio, Adriana inhales their scent and dies as he attempts to convince her that he still loves her.

Cilea’s theatrical masterpiece

Adriana Lecouvreur has music by Francesco Cilea and an Italian libretto by Arturo Colautti, based on the play by Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé.

The opera received its world premiere at Milan’s Teatro Lirico on November 6, 1902, with Enrico Caruso creating the role of Maurizio. Its success established Adriana Lecouvreur as Cilea’s most enduring opera and one of the best-known works associated with Italian verismo.

Cilea’s score balances dramatic confrontations with elegant, lyrical writing. Adriana’s entrance aria, “Io son l’umile ancella,” presents the actress as a servant of artistic inspiration, while Maurizio’s “La dolcissima effigie” and “L’anima ho stanca” provide two of the tenor’s principal musical highlights.

The second act also includes music inspired by Rococo and Arcadian entertainment, reflecting Cilea’s interest in the theatrical atmosphere of the eighteenth century.

Production and creative team

The La Fenice performances use a staging created by Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and ABAO Bilbao Opera.

Conductor: Riccardo Frizza
Director: Mario Pontiggia
Sets: Antonella Conte
Costumes: Marco Nateri
Lighting: Andrea Ledda
Orchestra and Choir: Teatro La Fenice

The opera’s setting moves between backstage life at the Comédie-Française, aristocratic salons and public theatrical performance. This allows the production to contrast Adriana’s commanding stage presence with the vulnerability of her private relationships.

Adriana Lecouvreur cast at La Fenice

The title role will be performed by Saioa Hernández, with Jamez McCorkle appearing as Maurizio and Chiara Mogini as the Princess of Bouillon.

The announced cast includes:

  • Adriana Lecouvreur: Saioa Hernández
  • Maurizio, Count of Saxony: Jamez McCorkle
  • Princess of Bouillon: Chiara Mogini
  • Michonnet: Carlos Álvarez
  • Prince of Bouillon: Mattia Denti
  • Quinault: William Corrò
  • Poisson: Marco Puggioni

Michonnet is an especially important character: the theatre manager quietly loves Adriana and remains one of her most loyal companions while she pursues Maurizio.

Choosing your performance

The production opens on Friday, October 22 at 7:00 PM. Further evening performances take place on October 26 and 28.

The performances on Sunday, October 24 and Saturday, October 30 begin at 3:30 PM, offering convenient afternoon alternatives for visitors who prefer to keep the evening available.

All five dates present the same production and announced principal cast.

Choosing seats at La Fenice

The stalls offer a direct view of the complete stage and are particularly suitable for following the opera’s detailed acting and theatrical scenes.

Central boxes combine a traditional La Fenice experience with a balanced stage perspective. Seats in lateral boxes can offer a more angled or partially restricted view depending on their precise position.

For Adriana Lecouvreur, central stalls or front seats in centrally positioned boxes should provide the best overall combination of stage visibility, vocal detail and atmosphere.
