Leoncavallo’s verismo masterpiece
First performed at Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on May 21, 1892, Pagliacci became one of the defining operas of the Italian verismo movement.
Instead of presenting distant kings or mythological heroes, Leoncavallo places ordinary travelling performers at the centre of the drama. Their personal conflicts unfold behind the scenes before becoming inseparable from the comedy they are expected to perform for the village audience.
The result is a compact and emotionally direct opera in which real jealousy gradually invades the theatrical performance, leaving the audience uncertain where acting ends and tragedy begins.
The story of Pagliacci
Canio leads a travelling theatre company together with his wife, Nedda. Although the troupe entertains local villagers with comic performances, their private relationship is increasingly unstable.
Nedda is secretly in love with Silvio and hopes to escape with him. Tonio, another member of the company, discovers their relationship after Nedda rejects his advances and reveals the betrayal to Canio.
Canio must then prepare to perform as the comic character Pagliaccio while struggling with the knowledge that his wife loves another man. During the evening show, the fictional confrontation between the stage characters begins to mirror the performers’ real lives.
The comedy collapses into genuine violence as Canio demands the name of Nedda’s lover before the horrified audience.
Famous music from Pagliacci
Pagliacci contains one of the most recognisable tenor arias in opera: “Vesti la giubba.”
Canio sings it while preparing his costume, forcing himself to become a laughing clown despite his private anguish. The contrast between the character’s painted smile and his emotional collapse has made the aria an enduring symbol of theatre concealing personal suffering.
The opera also opens with Tonio’s famous Prologue, which directly addresses the audience and explains that the emotions presented on stage belong to real people rather than fictional figures.
Nedda’s lyrical music provides moments of freedom and imagination, while the final play-within-the-play steadily transforms comic material into a tense psychological confrontation.
La Fenice staging at Teatro Malibran
The 2026 performances use a La Fenice production developed in partnership with the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia.
The announced artistic team includes:
Conductor: Daniele Callegari
Director: Andrea Bernard
Chorus Master: Alfonso Caiani
Orchestra and Choir: Teatro La Fenice
The involvement of the Accademia di Belle Arti gives the staging a strong visual and theatrical dimension, particularly important in an opera built around the relationship between backstage reality and public performance.
Pagliacci cast in Venice
The principal singers currently announced are:
- Nedda: Selene Zanetti
- Canio: Gregory Kunde
The remaining roles, including Tonio, Silvio, Beppe and other supporting parts, are still being finalised and will be published closer to the performances.
Gregory Kunde takes on one of the most demanding dramatic tenor roles in the Italian repertoire, while Selene Zanetti portrays Nedda’s conflict between her life within the travelling company and her desire to escape.
Opera at Teatro Malibran
Although Pagliacci forms part of the Teatro La Fenice season, all performances take place at Teatro Malibran, not inside the main La Fenice Opera House.
The historic auditorium provides an intimate environment for this concentrated drama. Its closer relationship between performers and audience should intensify the opera’s progression from public entertainment to private tragedy.
Visitors should check the venue carefully when planning their journey, as Teatro Malibran and Teatro La Fenice are separate theatres in Venice.
