He is deeply in love with Adina, an intelligent and independent young woman who appears more interested in teasing him than returning his affection. His chances become even smaller when the confident Sergeant Belcore arrives and immediately proposes marriage to her.

Nemorino’s fortunes seem to change with the appearance of Doctor Dulcamara, a travelling salesman who claims to possess a powerful love potion. The supposed elixir is really inexpensive wine, but Nemorino believes it will make Adina fall in love with him.

His new confidence creates a chain of comic misunderstandings before Adina finally recognises the sincerity of his feelings.

Famous music from L’elisir d’amore

L’elisir d’amore premiered at Milan’s Teatro della Canobbiana on May 12, 1832, and remains one of Donizetti’s most popular operas.

The score is filled with lively ensembles, graceful melodies and entertaining character music. Doctor Dulcamara makes his grand entrance with a rapid sales pitch advertising his supposed miracle remedies, while his exchanges with Nemorino provide some of the opera’s funniest moments.

The best-known passage is Nemorino’s aria “Una furtiva lagrima.” In this intimate tenor solo, he realises that Adina may genuinely love him after seeing a tear in her eye. Its emotional simplicity provides a moving contrast to the surrounding comedy.

Other highlights include Adina and Dulcamara’s duet “Quanto amore,” the celebratory chorus “Cantiamo, facciam brindisi” and the energetic ensemble scenes created by the confusion surrounding the elixir.
