Parsons Dance live in Venice

Founded by choreographer David Parsons in 1985, Parsons Dance is known for athletic movement, accessible theatricality and productions that connect contemporary dance with a wide range of musical styles.

The Venice programme moves between Beethoven’s symphonic writing, Stravinsky’s rhythmic intensity, the songs of Cat Stevens, Robert Fripp’s hypnotic sound and the Brazilian music of Milton Nascimento.

Rather than presenting one continuous story, the evening consists of five independent works:

  • Ludwig
  • Brother
  • The Road
  • Caught
  • Nascimento Novo

This varied format allows audiences to experience several different sides of Parsons Dance during a single performance.

Ludwig

Ludwig is a recent David Parsons creation set to the second movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

The choreography was first presented in the United States in 2026 and celebrates the expressive strength of Beethoven’s music. Dancers dressed in vivid orange perform fluid and energetic movements that combine contemporary technique with a joyful theatrical character.

The work offers an immediate and visually striking opening to the programme, connecting one of classical music’s most recognised composers with the physical language of contemporary American dance.

Brother

Created by David Parsons and Daniel Ezralow, Brother is a fast and playful duet set to music by Igor Stravinsky.

The choreography explores the relationship between two male dancers through rapid movement, competition, conflict and moments of physical connection. The performers alternate between apparent struggle and fraternal solidarity, creating a work that is both athletic and humorous.

Stravinsky’s music reinforces the changing rhythm of the relationship, giving the duet a nervous and unpredictable energy.

The Road

Created in 2021, The Road is danced to music by Cat Stevens and presents the journey of life as a continuous movement across the stage.

The dancers repeatedly travel from left to right, creating the impression of a path that cannot be reversed. Individuals arrive, meet, separate and continue forward, turning the simple act of crossing the stage into a visual metaphor for time and human experience.

The familiar music and clear theatrical concept make The Road one of the most accessible pieces in the programme.

Caught

Caught is one of David Parsons’ best-known works and has become a signature piece of the company.

Created in 1982 and performed to music by Robert Fripp, the solo uses precisely timed strobe lighting to capture the dancer during a sequence of jumps. The flashes create the visual illusion that the performer is suspended in the air or flying across the stage.

The effect depends on exact coordination between choreography, lighting and music. Although only one dancer performs, the work creates one of the evening’s most memorable visual moments.

Because Caught uses intense intermittent strobe lighting, spectators who are sensitive to flashing lights should consider this before booking.

Nascimento Novo

The programme concludes with Nascimento Novo, created in 2006 through a collaboration between David Parsons and Brazilian musician Milton Nascimento.

The choreography responds to Brazilian rhythms with colourful, sensual and energetic group movement. Rather than focusing on an isolated soloist, the work celebrates community, collective identity and the enjoyment of dancing together.

Its warmth and rhythmic vitality provide an uplifting contrast to the more introspective or theatrical pieces presented earlier in the evening.

Contemporary dance at Teatro Malibran

All three performances take place at Teatro Malibran, not inside the main La Fenice Opera House. The production nevertheless forms part of Teatro La Fenice’s 2026/27 dance season.

The historic auditorium provides an intimate environment for Parsons Dance. Its relatively close relationship between the audience and stage should allow spectators to appreciate the performers’ speed, physical precision and facial expression.

For contemporary dance, a central position is particularly useful because several pieces use movement across the full width of the stage. Central stalls generally provide the most direct overall perspective, while centrally positioned boxes offer a slightly elevated view of the formations.

Choosing your Parsons Dance performance

The performances on Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5 begin at 7:00 PM.

The final performance takes place on Saturday, March 6 at 5:00 PM, providing an earlier option for visitors who prefer to keep the remainder of the evening available. All three dates present the same five-work programme.
