Bellini’s Norma live in Venice

Set in Roman-occupied Gaul, Norma centres on a Druid high priestess forced to choose between her public duty and a dangerous private life.

Norma has secretly broken her vows and had two children with the Roman officer Pollione. When she discovers that Pollione now intends to leave her for the younger priestess Adalgisa, her love turns into jealousy, anger and a desire for revenge.

Adalgisa is unaware of Norma’s relationship with Pollione and initially approaches her for guidance. Their encounter creates one of the opera’s most compelling relationships: two women who begin as apparent rivals but gradually recognise the deception and suffering that connects them.

As political rebellion approaches and Norma’s secret becomes impossible to contain, she must decide whether to punish those who betrayed her or accept responsibility for her own actions.

One of the greatest bel canto operas

Norma premiered at Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1831, with Giuditta Pasta creating the title role. Bellini’s score combines long lyrical melodies, demanding vocal ornamentation and sudden moments of dramatic intensity.

The title role is considered one of opera’s greatest soprano challenges. The singer must combine vocal flexibility and sustained legato phrasing with the authority of a religious leader, the vulnerability of a betrayed lover and the emotional force of the final scene.

The opera’s most famous aria, “Casta diva,” is Norma’s prayer to the moon goddess. Its calm, expansive melody contrasts with the political tension surrounding her and has become one of the best-known soprano arias in the operatic repertoire. Other major moments include Norma and Adalgisa’s duet “Mira, o Norma” and the dramatic first-act trio between Norma, Pollione and Adalgisa.

A new La Fenice production

The 2027 performances present a completely new staging by Fondazione Teatro La Fenice in cooperation with Georgia’s Rustaveli National Theatre.

The creative team includes:

Conductor: Ramón Tebar
Director: Maria Todaro
Sets: Stéphane Moravski
Costumes: Camille Haith
Lighting: Robert Wierzel
Orchestra and Choir: Teatro La Fenice

Maria Todaro directs Bellini’s conflict between political power, religious authority and private desire, while Stéphane Moravski’s sets and Camille Haith’s costumes will establish the production’s visual world.

Because Norma depends so heavily on the relationships between its principal characters, the staging must balance large ceremonial scenes with intimate confrontations between Norma, Pollione and Adalgisa.

Norma cast at La Fenice

The title role will be performed by Marigona Qerkezi, with Hasmik Torosyan appearing as Adalgisa.

The announced cast includes:

  • Norma: Marigona Qerkezi
  • Adalgisa: Hasmik Torosyan
  • Pollione: Martin Muehle and Konstantin Kipiani
  • Oroveso: George Andguladze
  • Flavio: Paolo Antognetti
  • Clotilde: Carlotta Vichi

Martin Muehle and Konstantin Kipiani will alternate as Pollione. The remaining roles and any further casting details will be published closer to the performances.

Choosing your Norma performance

The production opens on Friday, September 24 at 7:00 PM. Further evening performances take place on September 25, 28, 29 and 30, followed by October 1.

The performances on September 26, October 2 and October 3 begin at 3:30 PM, providing convenient afternoon alternatives for visitors who prefer to leave the evening available.

All nine dates present the same new production, although Pollione will be shared between two tenors. Check the selected performance when booking if seeing a particular singer is important.

Choosing seats at La Fenice

The stalls provide a direct view of the stage and are particularly suitable for appreciating the production’s ceremonial scenes and dramatic confrontations.

Central boxes offer the traditional La Fenice experience while maintaining a balanced perspective. Seats inside lateral boxes may have a more angled or partially restricted view depending on their exact position.

For Norma, central stalls or front seats in centrally positioned boxes should provide the strongest combination of stage visibility, vocal detail and orchestral sound.
