Jenůfa returns to La Fenice after 85 years

The return of Jenůfa is one of the most distinctive events in La Fenice’s 2026/27 opera season.

Rather than another frequently performed Italian classic, audiences can discover a powerful work built around family conflict, social pressure, jealousy and the destructive fear of public disgrace.

Janáček based the opera on Gabriela Preissová’s realist play Její pastorkyňa, meaning “Her Stepdaughter”, and wrote both the music and libretto himself. The story is set in a close-knit rural community in Moravia, where personal choices are constantly judged against tradition and reputation.

Its long absence from La Fenice makes the 2027 production particularly interesting for regular opera audiences and visitors looking for something less conventional during their stay in Venice.

The story of Jenůfa

Jenůfa is expecting a child by Števa Buryja, a charming but unreliable young man. She hopes that marriage will protect her and the baby from scandal, but Števa refuses to accept responsibility.

His half-brother Laca is also in love with Jenůfa. Driven by jealousy, he injures her face, believing that destroying her beauty will end Števa’s interest in her.

Jenůfa’s stepmother, the Kostelnička, becomes increasingly desperate to protect the family’s reputation. Her attempt to control the situation leads to a terrible decision that changes every character’s life.

Although the opera contains dark events, it is not simply a story of cruelty. Its final scenes move towards confession, forgiveness and the possibility of redemption, giving Jenůfa an emotional conclusion of unusual power.

Janáček’s dramatic musical world

Jenůfa is an opera in three acts with music and libretto by Leoš Janáček.

Its musical language differs significantly from the long melodic lines associated with Puccini or Verdi. Janáček created short, urgent phrases influenced by the rhythms of spoken language, allowing the music to respond closely to each character’s fear, anger and hesitation.

The score moves between intimate domestic moments, tense confrontations and large choral scenes representing the surrounding village community. Folk-inspired elements connect the opera to its Moravian setting, while the orchestra reveals emotions that the characters cannot express openly.

This combination of psychological detail and concentrated drama makes Jenůfa one of the most compelling works of twentieth-century opera.

David Alden’s production

The La Fenice performances use the English National Opera staging directed by David Alden.

The creative team includes:

Conductor: Andriy Yurkevych
Director: David Alden
Sets: Charles Edwards
Costumes: Jon Morrell
Lighting: Adam Silverman
Choreographic movement: Maxine Braham

The production presents the rural community as an active force in the drama rather than merely a background setting. Social expectations, religious authority and fear of gossip surround the principal characters and contribute directly to the tragedy.

Charles Edwards’ sets and Jon Morrell’s costumes establish the opera’s enclosed social world, while Adam Silverman’s lighting helps shape the movement from public celebration to private crisis.

Jenůfa cast at La Fenice

The title role will be performed by Joyce El-Khoury, with Ingela Brimberg appearing as the Kostelnička Buryjovka.

The announced cast includes:

Jenůfa: Joyce El-Khoury
Kostelnička Buryjovka: Ingela Brimberg
Laca Klemeň: John Findon
Števa Buryja: Edgaras Montvidas
Starenka Buryjovka: Manuela Custer
Stárek: Dalibor Jenis

Additional roles will be announced closer to the opening performance.

The opera requires particularly strong dramatic performances from Jenůfa, Laca and the Kostelnička. Much of its impact depends on the singers communicating the characters’ emotional conflict as convincingly as the vocal writing.

Choosing your Jenůfa performance

The production opens on Friday, March 12 at 7:00 PM, followed by evening performances on March 16 and 18.

The performances on Sunday, March 14 and Saturday, March 20 begin at 3:30 PM, offering convenient afternoon alternatives for visitors who prefer to keep the evening available.

All five dates present the same English National Opera staging, although any casting variations should be checked when selecting a performance.

Choosing seats at La Fenice

The stalls provide the most direct view of the entire stage and are particularly suitable for a production in which acting, lighting and the relationships between characters are essential.

Central boxes offer a more traditional La Fenice experience while maintaining a balanced perspective. Seats in lateral boxes can provide a more angled or partially restricted view depending on their precise location.

For Jenůfa, central stalls or front seats in centrally positioned boxes should offer the strongest combination of visibility, dramatic detail and orchestral sound.
